Economic: Open Markets
At the end of World War 1 President Wilson created the 14 points system. Included in this 14 points system was a plan for open markets.Open markets would expand trade and business for all the countries involved by opening trade routes between the countries. Opening these trade routes would increase the flow of goods between these countries and aid in stimulating the economy. This would aid in creating foreign deals for companies and businessmen increasing the revenue entering the country, which is necessary to prevent inflation and maintain a good economic condition.
Social: In the trenches
The way that soldiers fought changed during the first world war. trench warfare developed, this meant that soldiers spent many months living in trenches in very close quarters with their comrades. Soldiers had to adapt to this new living style. They did this by changing the shape of the trenches to fit the season. They also became very close with the men living with them. They would fight with these men, starve and freeze with them, and when they were pulled off the front line it was with those same men. These close quarters and life altering experiences brought soldiers together to form strong social bonds.
Political: Alliances
Political cartoon of Domino effect
In the time preceding the war Alliances began to form. These alliances included the central powers and the allied powers. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire made up the central powers, while France, The United Kingdom, Russia, and later America made up the allied powers. These alliances seem to make sense at first, but problems arose. By allying themselves with other countries these countries were obligated them to protect their allies during any dispute. This system created the domino effect that started the war.
Do these events lead to progress?
President Wilson's Open Market plan is an example of progress during this time. It shows acceptance of other countries an cultures, forming bonds of trust, and potential economic success. The bonds of friendship formed by soldiers during wartime are another sign of progress, as they represent human interaction and trust that is crucial for the survival of civilization. The idea behind the alliance system shows acceptance and trust, and ultimately progress. The reality, however led to war which does not indicate progress.
