The insane rush of high spending the twenties was immediately halted by the Stock Market Crash of 1929. All of the debt that people built up, coupled with the corrupt systems of the market caused the market to basically break down. This crash left most people with no money because they had either invested in the market or the bank. The crash also caused the banks to crash taking people's money them leaving behind economic devastation.

In the economic crisis many people lost everything they owned including their home. Without home people needed a place to live so they built Hoovervilles. Hoovervilles weer small cities made out of shanty houses and inhabited by the poorest of those affected by the shaft. These Hoovervilles were a knew development of the Great Depression that changed the way people interacted and lived.

In response to the economic catastrophe President Roosevelt created the New Deal programs. These programs were designed to improve the country's economic status and return people to their jobs or new ones. Some of the programs were designed specifically for finding jobs. Other parts of the program were designed financial protection. One of these programs insured a certain amount of one's money so that they could use it if the bank crashed. these programs did eventually improve America's economic situation.
